In 2002 the Lede Family purchased sixty acres and a winery in Napa Valley’s Stags Leap District, renaming the estate Cliff Lede Vineyards. Cliff hired superstar viticulturalist David Abreu to replant the vineyards and he built a state-of-the-art gravity flow winemaking system along with extensive underground cellaring caves. If that's not enough, he hired Christopher Tynan who, as winemaker for Colgin Cellars produced no less than seven 100 point wines. This unrivaled team has proven extraordinarily successful and Cliff Lede wines are some of Napa Valley's most sought after.
This wine is a very rare treat, ordinarily only available at the winery and to the winery's exclusive mailing list. This 2016 Claret is a Bordeaux style blend as the name suggests. The grapes are sourced from their estate Twin Peaks Vineyard and a few of their valued grower partners within Napa Valley. The wine is composed of small batches from a variety of blocks, representing a diverse range of carefully selected rootstocks and clones. Yields are maintained at sparse levels, with a focus on canopy management and vine balance. The resulting blend boasts remarkable depth and complexity.
The grapes were hand picked in the early morning and subjected to a rigorous three-tiered hand sorting process. Then cold soaked for approximately five days, and fermentations with extended maceration lasted from three to four weeks. The wine was aged in French oak, for twenty-one months. The final blend has all five Bordeaux varietals; 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Malbec, 20% Petit Verdot, 13% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc.
The wine shows rich cassis, blackberry, and cherry aromas that burst from the glass. There are black licorice flavors, milk chocolate truffle, clove, and rose petal flavors surrounding the core of cassis and black cherry. The luscious tannin is silky and plush and the wine has a rich mouthfeel that keeps calling you back for more.
