About Clos Saint-Jean 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape, Deus Ex Machina, Magnum 1.5L

Magnum 1.5L
As one of the most highly acclaimed producers in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Clos Saint-Jean is recognized to produce upper echelon wines with critical recognition. In 1900 the estate was founded by Edmund Tacussel in the famous lieu-dit La Crau, and they were bottling commercial wines by 1910 before Châteauneuf-du-Pape was an official appellation. To this day the winery is family owned and operated, as well as having been assisted by the late influential consultant, Philippe Cambie since 2003.

The property covers 115 acres. A big part is situated on the La Crau plateau. About 48 acres are situated at two small lieux-dits in Bedarrides, Cabane de Saint Jean og Coteaux de Saint Jean.

All grapes are de-stemmed before fermentation. The maceration lasts for about 35 days. For Grenache no ageing in small barrels but the other red varieties are aged in new or one-year-old barrels for about 12 months.

The Deus Ex Machina bottling comes from the lowest yield plots of just over 1 ton per axcre. 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvedre.

Wine Spectator scored this 97 points saying "Boasts bitter plum, raspberry and black cherry reduction notes that have a lively savory, garrigue streak, while grippy-edged tar, tobacco and ganache notes pepper the finish. Muscular and dense but the cut is there, and the fruit core takes a late encore for good measure. Grenache and Mourvèdre."

Jeb Dunnuck scored this 97 points saying "A much more powerful wine based on 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvedre, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Deus-Ex Machina reminds me slightly of the 2011 with its spicy, perfumed, complex bouquet of red and black fruits, dried flowers, pepper, and Provençal herbs, with more gamey, meaty notes emerging with time in the glass. Full-bodied on the palate, it's balanced, has ultra-fine yet building tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish." Extremely Limited!!
