About Col d'Orcia 2016 Brunello Di Montalcino, Nastagio

As one of the original estates of Montalcino and now the largest certified organic estate in Tuscany, Col d’Orcia is a leader in Brunello di Montalcino, helping to define and promote one of Italy’s most prestigious wine regions. Tradition, integrity and sustainability are the pillars of the estate, whose classic style wines are celebrated all over the world.

Nastagio is a 19-acre single vineyard within the Col d’Orcia estate, with Southwest exposure. First planted in 2006, it is composed entirely of Sangiovese clones specially selected from research work in partnership with the University of Florence. Produced using some elements of both traditional and modern Brunello production, it is initially aged in 500L tonneaux, a modern, French-influenced approach that softens the astringency of the tannins. The wine is then transferred to traditional large “botti,” that imparts elegant tertiary elements, ensuring a wine that is both age-worthy but can be drunk immediately.

Grapes were manually harvested with a rigorous selection of the best grapes in the vineyard and cellar. Fermentation for 18-20 days in shallow stainless-steel tanks, designed to extract tannins and color efficiently but delicately.

Wine Advocate scored this wine 94 points saying “Always released one year later as if it were a Riserva (although it is not labeled as such), the Col d'Orcia 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Nastagio offers an increased level of clarity and purity that comes directly from the high quality of organically farmed fruit collected in this classic vintage. This growing site is characterized by rocky, limestone-rich soils. This is a broad and large expression of Sangiovese that wraps evenly over the palate, offering good textural weight and freshness along the way. That 15% alcohol is a bit much, but it's a common feature in many wines from this vintage. Production is 13,000 bottles.”

Decanter Magazine scored this wine 93 points saying “Col d’Orcia’s Nastagio bottling comes from an 8ha site planted in 2006. The result of a collaborative experiment with the University of Florence, it also represents the estate’s more modern Brunello as it ages in small, 500-Litre French oak tonneaux for the first year followed by an additional 12 months in larger casks. Attractive and approachable aromas suggest coffee, tobacco and plum. A meatiness comes into play on the palate along with appetising salted liquorice. Long, well-composed and assertive tannins are cushioned by luxuriant fruit. Somewhat imposing now but not fierce, it has a lingering savoury finish.”

Vinous scored this wine 94 points saying “The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Nastagio is youthfully coy, requiring time to release its dark fruits and savory exotic spices. This is velvety in feel yet not weighty at all, with ripe black fruits contrasting nervous acidity as autumnal spices come forward toward the close. Hints of vanilla, tobacco and sweet herbs linger through the long, structured finale. The 2016 finds a wonderful balance of fruit, structure and acidity, and it should be glorious in another five to ten years’ time.”

Wine Enthusiast scored this wine 93 points saying “Underbrush, toasted nut, grilled herb and eucalyptus aromas waft out of the glass On the full bodied palate, tightly knit, close grained tannins support dried cherry, licorice, tobacco and mocha notes Give it several more years to fully develop Drink 2024 2029.”
