About Col d'Orcia 2020 Rosso di Montalcino

When the Cinzano family arrived in 1973, most of the wine bottled in Montalcino was Brunello. A second denomination, “Vino Rosso dai Vigneti di Brunello,” was used locally to improve the image of the wine sold mostly in bulk formats. Count Alberto Marone Cinzano decided that it was just the right wine for drinking every day. He used to say: “it’s the young Sangiovese I drink at lunchtime.” In 1976, three years later, Col d’Orcia already represented more than half the production of “Rosso” in Montalcino. Thanks to Col d’Orcia’s efforts in 1983, Rosso di Montalcino became a D.O.C. wine by Decree of the Italian President of the Republic.

Rosso di Montalcino is now a classic wine, made with pure Sangiovese grapes, released one year after the harvest so as to retain all the freshness and fruitiness of a young wine and at the same time the intensity that only the Montalcino terroir is capable of delivering.

Deep ruby red color with violet hues. On the nose, ample and fruity with notes of small red ripe fruits, blackberry and cherry, well balanced with oak spices. On the palate, good structure, soft and pleasant tannins. The aftertaste is long, persistent and fruity.

Vinous scored this 91 Points saying, "The 2020 Rosso di Montalcino wafts up with a classic mix of earth tones, Tuscan dust and bright strawberries. It’s silky yet cool-toned in feel with inner violet and lavender tones over a core of tart wild berry fruit. The 2020 leaves a coating of youthfully grippy tannins, yet it keeps the mouth watering as sweet minty herbs slowly fade. This is a fun and fruit-focused Rosso that maintains wonderful balance, and I love how savory, almost salty it is at times."

Wine Enthusiast scored this 91 Points saying, "This young Sangiovese offers classic varietal aromas of woodland berries, camphor and tilled earth along with a whiff of blue flower. Ripe but also showing bright fruit, the full-bodied, savory palate doles out fleshy Marasca cherry, prune and licorice alongside taut, fine-grained tannins that grip the finish. Best after 2023."

Jeb Dunnuck scored this 90 Points saying, "There is a light umami note of shitake in the 2020 Rosso Di Montalcino as well as candied berries and pressed flowers. Medium-bodied, but generous with ripe cherry, strawberry, and fine tannins as well as a clean and polished finish, this is a lovely Rosso to drink over the next several years."
