Here's a super find! Jim Cowan is a special kind of winemaker. He makes graceful wines that display individual vineyard character; terroir if you will. Cowan Cellars wines are low alcohol, never see new wood and Jim always times the harvest to retain lively acidity in the finished wine. Jim doesn’t own any of his own vineyards but he sources from extraordinary ones!
This Syrah comes from the Maoveni Vineyard, located in Bennett Valley near Matanzas Creek. This vineyard has ideal exposure to the sun on a southern slope and is so steep that workers must be extremely careful lest they lose their footing on the incline. It gets direct sun in the afternoon but the sea fog from the Petaluma Gap in the morning and evening cools everything down so the grapes ripen slowly and take on lots of nuance and complexity. The vines are over ten years old and are 100% Alban clone #1 and the yields are extremely low. The fruit for this Cowan Syrah is exemplary and the wine reflects it.
Fermentation is started with foot-tred, 25% whole-clusters on native yeast. The must is then pressed to barrel to continue fermenting until dry. Racked into neutral French oak barrels, it ages for 22 months. Total production is less than 150 cases (very limited!)

This rich red has an opaque, black/purple color with a nose of plums, blackberries, black pepper and accents of smoked charcuterie. On the palate it shows good concentration, bright acids, juicy, velvet textures and soft tannins with black plums, black currants, blackberries; notes of pepper, cedar and exotic spice. It's extremely long on the finish. Still showing youthful but will age and develop beautifully for 5-10 years in your cellar.
Best of all, since Jim had new vintages coming on and need to make some room, we were able to grab what was left of this extremely limited single vineyard Syrah at a very advantageous price.
