Another stunning Chateauneuf from Domaine de Pegau.
The Domaine de Pegau is a family owned winery. Laurence Feraud has taken over the 50 acre estate from her father Paul and they continue to produce some of the most outstanding wines in Chateauneuf du Pape. This is the latest release of their Cuvee Reservee which in the excellent 2019 vintage is an exceptional wine.
Sourced from vines averaging 60+ years of age, the blend is 80% Grenache, 6% Syrah, 4% Mourvèdre with the remaining 10% other authorized varietals. Whole grape bunches were lightly crushed and fermented with wild yeasts for 5-7 days in traditional cement vats. This was followed by a further maceration period of 7-14 days, with 1-2 pump-overs per day. The press and free run juice was aged in 5,000 liter oak foudres for 18 months, and then blended and bottled without filtration.
The Wine Advocate tasted a barrel sample and scored it 95-97 points saying "The 2019 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Réservée looks set to rival the best examples of this bottling. Made up of approximately 80% Grenache, with 6% Syrah, 4% Mourvèdre and smaller amounts of other permitted varieties, it's impressively complex on the nose, with scents of black cherries, blackberries and black olives, plus mysterious wafts of violets and garrigue. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, it finishes long and velvety, a sure-fire bet for cellaring. Best after 2025."
James Suckling scored this 95 points saying "This youthful Chateauneuf has a very complex nose of graphite, raw meat and lilies. With aeration the black-cherry note steadily grows in intensity. Bold, leathery and earthy palate with fine tannins that build steadily on at the extremely long and straight mineral finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2024."
Jeb Dunnuck tasted from barrel and scored this 93-95 points saying "The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Réservée showed better this go-round than last year and has a complex, more classic style in its garrigue, pepper, sweet spice, and assorted red and black fruits. Nicely textured and medium to full-bodied, with ripe tannins, it's going to be a classic expression of this cuvée that readers will love."
Wine Spectator scored this 94 points saying "Dark and brooding, this has serious heft, with tightly coiled plum reduction and black licorice offset by savory tea, menthol, smoked meat and iodine. A great example of an old-school style, with mineral intensity building and salty iron and grippy tannins carrying the finish. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre."
