About Domaine Drouhin 2021 Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills

Robert Drouhin’s vision of an Oregon estate winery that could rival the great vineyards of Burgundy has been realized at DDO. From what began as test plantings of cloned Pinot Noir rootstock, Domaine Drouhin now encompasses 130 acres of hillside vineyards. Interspersed with the Pinot Noir vines are 13 acres of Chardonnay, planted at various elevations and, like in Burgundy, planted right alongside rows of Pinot Noir. The densely planted vines are farmed sustainably, L.I.V.E. certified, and tended to by hand when leaves and fruit are thinned; harvesting is also done entirely by hand.

The 2021 Pinot Noir was handpicked into 25-pound totes, then hand-sorted and de-stemmed in our four level gravity flow winery. Fermentations are long and careful; by November, all of our Pinot was safely resting in barrel. Our barrels are custom made in Burgundy, using oak from France’s best forests, allowing the character of the soil and vintage to show through.

Winemaker Notes
The 2021 Pinot Noir Dundee Hills is youthful and bright, deftly downplaying the topsy-turvy growing season that ended with gentle, ideal harvest conditions. On the nose, the wine is bursting with black cherry and ripe sour cherry tones, with hints of dried violets and lightly roasted coffee beans. The palate confirms the nose with added notes of fresh raspberry, cranberry, and a decidedly earthy touch. This wine is lovely, vibrant, and elegant now, but I think it will be in a perfect place with 5 – 12 years of cellaring.

Ripe black cherries mix with aromas of sugar cookies and beeswax to create a perfume worthy of dabbing on pulse points. Blackcap raspberries dominate the palate, joined by unsweetened dark chocolate and espresso shots. The wine’s elevated acidity and velvety tannins join a creamy texture in a most delightful way.

94 Points Wine Spectator
Graceful and fragrant, with delicately layered cherry and raspberry flavors laced with rose petal, dusky spices and a hint of fresh forest floor. Ends with refined tannins.

94 Points James Suckling
Fragrant and open pinot with aromas of cherries, wild strawberries, orange zest, nutmeg and white pepper. It’s medium-bodied with silky, creamy tannins. Delicious balance of just-ripe berry fruit and subtle spice. Very long, too. Drink or hold.
