The Petit-Roudil family has been producing Tavel wines since the 16th century when the monks were making the local wines. The most important name in the Domaine Moulin la Viguerie's history is that of Mireiles’s great grandfather, Aimé Roudil (1870-1938), who formally established the estate in the years following the phyloxerra crisis.
Today Gael Petit and his wife Mireille Roudil are dedicated to the production of great Tavel wines. Tavel is the only appellation in the Rhône valley that produces Rose wine exclusively.
For this La Combe des Rieu Tavel Gaël opted for a whole-cluster, infusion-style vinification with native yeast, all but eliminated sulfur usage, allowing the wine to complete its malolactic fermentation, and bottled it without fining or filtration. The blend is 50% Grenache, 30% Cinsault, 10% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre, Bourboulenc and Clairette and La Combe des Rieu is a Tavel whose intensity, complexity, and decisive sense of terroir have more in common with the regal reds of Châteauneuf than with southern France’s sea of generic rosés.
Decanter Magazine scored this 93 points saying “Very dark, more a pale red than a rosé. Medium-bodied. Acidity is low but balanced. There’s a gentle tannic pull and a good sense of tension. Some length of black-cherry flavour, some underlying herbs like bay and juniper and a hint of whisky. A proper wine with real character and interest. Not sweet or confected like so many Tavels. Should age with interest too. Grenache, Cinsault, Carignan and Clairette, some co-planted, grown in the clay limestone soils of the Malaven valley. Hand-harvested, not destemmed, no fining or filtration. In organic conversion.” On Sale!
