ohan Lardy's real treasure is the 2.4 acre Moulin-a-Vent “Les Michelons” vineyard. 100% Gamay from untrellised vines between 40 and over 110 years old with steep southern exposure in pink, red granite, quartz soils, the subsoil is manganese-rich. Vines are planted at 300 meters elevation. Yield is less than 3 tons per acre.
The grapes are hand harvested and then undergo whole cluster maceration for 20 days. A 12-14 day fermentation in concrete vats using indigenous yeasts follows. The wine spends a few months on the lees after malolactic and then is aged 8 months in neutral oak barrels. Bottled unfined. Vegan.
James Suckling scored this 95 points saying "A unique nose of graphite, very ripe redcurrant and liquorice welcomes you to this exceptionally elegant and original Moulin-à-Vent. Deep and subtle with really fine tannins that make the long finish very silky and complex. Drink or hold."
