About Domaines Ott 2019 Rose, Chateau de Selle, Grand Cru, Cotes de Provence

Château de Selle was the first estate acquired by Marcel Ott in 1912. It is in Taradeau, near Draguignan, on soil where only olive, lavender and mulberry trees used to grow. Not far from Thoronet Abbey, close to a former 18th century residence of the Counts of Provence, the soil is gypsum, red clay, dolomite and sandstone mixed with gravel and stone, today producing highly distinguished and elegant wines. Perched on high limestone inland slopes where it is sheltered from winter frosts, the estate enjoys a microclimate of mild winters, early springs and warm and dry summers, always with a great deal of sunshine.

Vines are grown in the same way on terraced vineyards. Production is constant, respectful of the environment and well-balanced. The average age of the vines at Château de Selle is nineteen years old. Wines are made from an accomplished blend of several grape varieties with which half of the estate’s 345 acres are planted: Cabernet Sauvignon lends complexity, elegance and magnificent strength, Grenache provides a full-bodied texture, Cinsault adds a delicate and rounded touch, while Syrah gives its rich colour to the blends.

The Wine Advocate scored this 91 points saying "The beauty of the Ott rosés is that they don't wallop you with confected aromas, remaining cool and elegant. The 2019 Cotes de Provence Rose Chateau de Selle—a blend of 56% Grenache, 25% Cinsault, 11% Syrah and 8% Mourvèdre—offers up scents of wet stones, grapefruit, lime and hints of wild strawberries. It's medium-bodied, with a fine line of acidity, a delicately silky texture and a lingering, refreshing finish."

Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored this 92 points saying "Bringing out freshness as well as the richness of the Ott style, this wine is generous, full of red fruits while also having an attractive, lip-smacking mineral acidity. Drink now."

Wine & Spirits scored this 96 points saying “In the world of wine, rosé has it easy: If it’s pink and pretty, it’s already on its way to being well accepted. Rarely does a rosé jump out of the glass and demand attention. But this one seems to have packaged up a Mediterranean breeze along with the scents of strawberries and garrigue, unleashing it with every sip. My nine-year-old, doing her own independent appraising, said, “It smells warm—not like the wine is warm, but like it comes from a warm place.” That place is inland from the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, 345 acres of stony soils and limestone terraces, a remote location Marcel Ott purchased in 1912. Today, cousins Christian and Jean- François Ott tend the vines, working with the backing of parent company Louis Roederer, which funded the building of a new winery at the estate in 2017, designed by Carl Fredrik Svenstedt. All those elements came together in a rosé that channels the place it’s grown in an elegant and understated way, yet with a persistence that speaks to its structure and strength. Impressive now, this will be even better with a year or two in bottle.”
