Not just an entrepreneur but a true visionary, Dan Duckhorn was the first Napa winemaker to see the potential for Merlot as not just something to blend with Cabernet but as the primary grape in a great Napa Valley wine. He founded his winery on that premise and the rest is history. No other Merlot from California has achieved the success, the accolades or the following that Duckhorn enjoys. The wines are always highly allocated and snapped up by legions of loving admirers. Last vintage was their 40th Anniversary bottling, so now onto the next 40 years.
This 2018 is a blend of 82% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1.4% Cabernet Franc, 0.4% Petit Verdot and 0.2% Malbec aged 15 months in 100% French oak 40% new. It shows aromas of ripe cherry and black raspberry to its sweet, dusty tannins and supple texture, this a lush and expansive expression of Napa Valley Merlot. Luxurious flavors of black plum, rhubarb crumble and chocolate-covered raspberry mingle with hints of graphite and clove on the long, vibrant finish.
