Here's a luscious Zinfandel from the Sierra Foothills and the winemaking talent behind it is a thoroughbred stable, including Mark Herold, Jay Buoncristiani and Julien Fayard. Mark started his career as Research Enologist at Joseph Phelps Vineyards and later created his own brand called Merus in 1998. Jay was named “Rising Star of Napa Cabernet” by the Wine Spectator, #25 in the Top 100 wines of the world from Wine Enthusiast, and a 97-point rated wine from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate where Parker called Jay’s wine “truly magnificent.” Julien Fayard worked in Bordeaux at Lafite Rothschild and Smith Haut Laffite before becoming Philipe Melka’s director of winemaking. Pretty impressive resumes and when you try this Zin you'll be equally impressed.
The old vine Zin is planted in high-altitude vineyards with sandy clay loam soils. The deep roots bring complexity and the altitude brings slow ripening for added nuance and perfect balance. The wine was fermented in temperature-controlled tanks and then aged for 10 months in 49% new French oak barrels.
It shows rich, complex flavors of blackberry, plum, and black cherry accented by hints of earth, vanilla and pepper. The old vines impart elegant, intense tannins that provide excellent structure for this full-bodied wine. The palate is bold and broad with tongue-swirling flavors of dried cherry, currants, white pepper and hints of sweet tobacco lifted by vibrant acidity. Only a small lot was produced of this "superstar" wine so it's limited and we expect it to go fast. On Sale!!
