The Jumilla region in Spain's southeast has garnered a stellar reputation for its old vine grapes, particularly Monsatrell and the dense, dark, concentrated wines it produces. Well we've managed to source one that really bolsters that reputation. Ego Bodegas was started in 2011 specifically to make outstanding wines from Jumilla's old vines.
This warm continental region gets over 3000 hours of sunshine a year which is ideal for ripening Monastrell as well as Syrah and Petit Verdot (the blend here is 70% Monastrell, 20% Syrah and 10% Petit Verdot). The vineyards lie at an altitude of over 2800 feet which creates a cooling effect that balances the ripening and lets the grapes evolve slowly with incredible nuances. The vines are 50 years old so they offer very low yields which adds to the complexity and concentration. This wine was aged 18 months in new French and American oak barrels.
The Wine Spectator scored this 92 points and said "This big red is bold yet balanced. Blackberry and currant flavors are ripe yet remain fresh, backed by licorice, cocoa, sanguine and blood orange notes. The muscular tannins are well-integrated, giving way to a floral finish. Monastrell, Syrah and Petit Verdot."
Low yields means limited production which usually means high price. However we were able to acquire this rich, satisfying red wine gem at very advantageous price so we can offer it at price far below the regular retail. We don't expect it to last very long so please don't wait!
