About Elvio Cogno 2018 Barolo, Ravera

Vinous Media said recently “Elvio Cogno is one of the hottest wineries in Piedmont right now. Proprietors Nadia Cogno and Valter Fissore have been on a tear of late and show no signs whatsoever of slowing down. The Barolos are made in an enlightened traditional style that showcases the unique attributes of the estate’s various parcels, all located in Ravera.”

Ravera is the name of the cru where the vineyard is located. This vineyard encircles the cellar, it is essentially the hillside vineyard surrounding the estate — the great, classic cru of Novello. Aged 24 months in large (25-30hl) Slavonian oak barrels, followed by 6 months in bottle.

This wine from the 2018 vintage was fermented in stainless steel, temperature-controlled, with maceration for 30 days. The wine than aged 24 months in large 25-30 hl Slavonian oak barrels.

Wine Enthusiast Magazine awarded this a Cellar Selection and scored it 97 points saying "This beautiful, luminously hued Barolo opens with enticing scents of perfumed berry, dark spice, eucalyptus, violet and forest floor. The savory palate combines elegance and structure, delivering juicy red cherry, raspberry compote, star anise and wild mint framed in taut, refined tannins that give it a smooth but firm texture. Bright acidity keeps energized. What a stunner. Drink 2024–2038."

The Wine Advocate scored this 94 points saying "The Elvio Cogno 2018 Barolo Ravera is becoming one of the most important wines in Novello, and it performs very nicely in this more challenging vintage. In fact, 2018 helps to cement Ravera's steadfast reputation precisely because it performs so well despite spells of humidity and heat. The wine shows small-berry detailing with rust and crushed stone at the back. There is a point of bitterness that accompanies the tannins of this full-bodied wine."
