About Farmhouse 2015 Red Blend, Cline

Fred Cline learned a love for farming from his grandfather Valeriano Jacuzzi at their ranch in Oakley. This area in Contra Costa County was a center for immigrants who planted some of the original grapevines. As the San Francisco Bay Area grew, the small farms and vineyards of the area were rapidly being replaced by strip malls and housing tracts. Fred, and a few other like-minded growers, stood their ground and set about working to restore and protect those head-pruned, dry-farmed, ancient vines planted deep in sandy soils. The rest is history as Cline Zins are now legendary. Farmhouse is his latest offering. Two distinct vineyards combine for this red blend. The Oakley vineyards run along the shores of the San Joaquin and Sacramento Rivers. The vines root deep in the sand-soil and produce intense fruit. The Sonoma Coast vineyards experience foggy mornings and sunny afternoons bringing out the bright fruit flavors and deep color. 48% Zinfandel, 39% Merlot, 5% Mourvédre, 4% Syrah, 3% Grenache and 2% Petite Sirah starting with handpicked grapes. Must is pumped into temperature-controlled, stainless-steel tanks. Once the wine has extracted just the right amount of tannins, the grapes are pressed. Both free run and press juice combine to enhance the wine’s structure. The wine is racked to 40% new French oak with a medium toast, to enhance but not overpower the fruit. This ripe red is medium-bodied with boysenberry, tobacco and black-pepper flavors. It has smooth tannins and luscious fruit that suggest good aging potential, but why wait, it's delicious now!
