About Fattoria dei Barbi 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva

Previous Vintage of #2 Wine of the Year!

This Riserva of Brunello is made with a special selection of grapes collected from the best vineyards in Montalcino. The ageing in barrel and in bottle is longer than the one for a regular Brunello, thus the wine has a deeper concentration and a wider complexity of aromas.

After a humid and rainy Winter, with mild temperatures, the Spring maintained more or less the same climatic characteristics, but with warmer temperatures. This helped the growth of the vines. The first part of the Summer was fresher and more humid than usual. In the second part, the weather was drier and warmer, more suitable for the season. The warm weather continued in the early Autumn, with occasional rains which refreshed the environment. The cooler nights made easier for the vines to carry on the process of maturation with the right balance.

Before the fermentation the grapes were subjected to a cold pre-fermentative maceration which consists in cooling the grapes at a temperature of 16°C in an environment protected by CO2. This process increases the extraction of polyphenols and aroma compounds. The regular alcoholic fermentation followed and lasted 16/17 days at a controlled temperature of 27°-28°C. After the racking and the malolactic fermentation the wine aged in small-medium size oak barrels (2,25 – 15 hl) for the first months. Later it completed the aging in larger oak barrels, for a total period of three years and then is bottled at least 6 months before the release.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate scored this wine 95 points saying Fattoria dei Barbi strikes a terrific balance between elegance and sheer muscle in the 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva. This Riserva is distinguished by dark fruit and savory tones of toasted clove, cedar, campfire ash, leather, tobacco and smoked bacon. Those smoky flavors are expertly woven into the thick fiber of this well-structured wine. They may not appeal to everyone, and indeed this wine offers a higher level of aromatic intensity compared to many of its peers, but I quite like it. Some winter nights call for a robust Brunello to pair with grilled meat cooked over an open flame as snowflakes fall gently outside. This wine completes that pretty picture.

James Suckling gave this wine 94 points saying A succulent red with plum, cherry, chocolate and cookie character. Some walnut and burnt-orange undertones. Full-bodied, layered and delicious. Chewy and intense at the end. Give it a couple years to soften.

Wine Spectator gave this wine a score of 93 points noting A dense, muscular red, this sports black cherry, plum, leather, tobacco and tar flavors. There is requisite fruit to offset the gruff tannins, with a long aftertaste of fruit, savory and mineral. Best from 2023 through 2042.

Wine Enthusiast scored this wine 91 points saying Underbrush, blue-flower, new leather and dark spice aromas form the nose. The lithe, linear palate offers dried cherry, tobacco and star anise alongside polished tannins and firm acidity.
