About Feudi di San Gregorio 2009 Serpico, Irpinia IGT

A very rare treat. Here is  the flagship wine from Feudi San Gregorio aged to an ideal drinking perfection. Feudi di San Gregorio was established in 1986 in Sorbo Serpico, a tiny village in Campania’s Irpinia region, near Mount Vesuvius, by the Capaldo and Ercolino families from Irpinia. This highly acclaimed winery Encourages us to rediscover the identity of Mediterranean flavors through indigenous grapes that reach their full potential with their modern winemaking approach.

Serpico is a 100% Aglianico wine from their historic “Dal Re” vineyard in deep soil originally from volcanic ash. Manual harvesting starts in mid-late October and lasts until early November. After pressing, a 10 day maceratioin on the skins and alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel for 10 days. Malolactic fermentation takes place in wood and the wine ages 18 months in medium-toasted new French oak barrels.

This 2009 has reached a peak of drinkability and shows remarkable complexity and ans suppleness.

The Wine Advocate scored this 93 points saying "Wonderfully alive in the glass, the 2009 Serpico (Aglianico) is terrific in this vintage. A layered, beautifully expressive wine, the 2009 flows across the palate with dark fruit. Game, smoke, tobacco, cloves and incense develop later, adding gravitas and weight, but without excess heaviness. Feudi has done a wonderful job of preserving tons of varietal character, while giving this Aglianico a measure of pure polish and finesse I don’t remember seeing in the past. The 2009 is so striking in its beauty it can be enjoyed today, but there will be even more reward for those who can wait at least a few years more. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029."

Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored this 91 points saying "Underbrush, leather, dense black plum, black cherry, clove and black pepper all meld seamlessly together in the glass. This is still young, with aggressive tannins and nervous acidity that need time to tame, but going forward, it should develop layers of complexity. This will be even better after 2019."
