About Fontanafredda 2016 Barolo, MGA, Proprieta in Fontanafredda

Since 1858, the Fontanafredda Estate & Winery has been instrumental to the growth and international awareness of Barolo, while championing sustainability and community engagement in the Langhe region of Piedmont. Under the lead of visionary entrepreneur, Oscar Farinetti, Fontanafredda has built a portfolio of wines that express the depth and diversity of the Langhe, produced from grapes that are farmed from organic and sustainably managed vineyards. Since the 2018 harvest, Fontanafredda is the largest certified organic winery in Piedmont.

MGA Fontanafredda is a single-vineyard within the greater cru site of the Fontanafredda estate, itself demarcated as an MGA. As Fontanafredda is the only producer to farm this vineyard, this makes the wine a “monopole.” It rests on ancient Helvetian and Tortonian soils, now covered with clayey mars and sand. Receiving South and South-West, at a vineyard altitude of 250–310m asl. Vines are guyot trained with plant density of 4,000–5,000 plants/ha.

This 100% Nebbiolo is fermented in stainless steel vats at controlled temperature, the wine the macerates with its skins for about one month. Aged in medium and large oak casks for two years, followed by additional 12 months in bottle. Only 1,250 cases were produced of this wine and a limited 250 cases were imported to the US!

Decanter rated this wine 97 Points and gave it the Platinum Award in the 2020 World Wine Awards raving... 'Resplendent red fruit nose. Rich and broad, concentrated and succulent, this has tension as well as weight. Initially it seems forward, but tannins and acidity and a touch of oak add force and drive. Brilliant wine!'

Wine Enthusiast rated in 95 Points and said 'Smooth and juicy, this fresh, polished red offers enticing aromas of rose, violet, forest berry and baking spice. On the delicious, succulent palate, refined tannins accompany ripe morello cherry, raspberry compote, nutmeg and cinnamon. It's already thoroughly enjoyable. Drink through 2031.'

Wine Spectator scored it 93 points saying 'Balsamic aromas of juniper, eucalyptus and sage introduce this intense red, which offers a beam of ripe cherry midpalate, swept up in the dusty tannins in the end. The sweet fruit returns, as this finds a nice equilibrium. Best from 2023 through 2042.'

James Suckling also gave it 93 Points and had this to say 'This is so perfumed and beautiful with cherry, strawberry and rose aromas that follow through to a full body. Firm and racy with a very long finish. The aftertaste is like fresh mushrooms and dark fruit. Drink after 2023.'
