About Freemark Abbey 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon, Sycamore Vineyard, Napa Valley

Back in 1976, Freemark Abbey Cabernet was one of the winning wines in the famous Judgment in Paris Tasting. It's been a Napa Valley staple for decades and today Freemark Abbey is owned by the Jess Jackson family and has a renewed focus and vitality. Sycamore Vineyard's proximity to the Mayacamas mountains provides the perfect climate for growing a rich, textured Cabernet.

This 2017 is 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot, and 3% Merlot. The grapes were sourced soley from the Sycamore Vineyard in Rutherford. The wine was aged in 74% new French oak for 27 months.

James Suckling scored this 97 points saying, "Mint, spearmint, dark-berry and blueberry aromas. Leaves and sage, too. Full-bodied and firm with fantastic depth. Cool fruit with menthol and mint. Spice. Refreshing. Firm tannins. Fantastic 2017. Drink or hold."

Wine Enthusiast scored this 95 points saying, "This deeply colored Cabernet sees small additions of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. It is soft and supple, with red fruit at its core. A mix of cherry and currant play well against the savory components and graceful structure."

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate scored this 94 points saying, "The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Sycamore Vineyards was aged for 27 months in French oak barrels, 74% new. Deep garnet-purple colored, the nose features compelling notions of crème de cassis, blueberry compote and boysenberries with suggestions of black olives, fragrant earth and fallen leaves plus a waft of Indian spices. Medium to full-bodied, taut, muscular and packed with black fruit layers, it has a solid structure of firm, grainy tannins, delivering a long, refreshing finish."
