Frescobaldi's property in Chianti Classico Tenuta Perano is located on the hills of Gaiole in Chianti with vineyards 1500 feet above sea level. The south, southwestern exposure and the amphitheater-shaped layout magnifies the exposure to the sun and concentrates the heat from it. The combination of elevation, exposure, and the shape and slope of the vineyards offer an extraordinarily unique quality setting that results in brilliant purple wines possessed of intensely fruity aromas and a great tannic structure rife with elegance.
Once harvested by hand, the grapes were vinified in stainless steel vats at controlled temperature. Maceration on the skins with frequent pumping over allowed for perfect extraction of the polyphenolic substances, providing just the right color intensity and typical structure. The wine was then partially aged in wood casks, delicately enriching the bouquet. The wine was released after an additional ageing period in the bottle.
Tenuta Perano Chianti Classico 2020 has a wonderful red color. On the nose it has floral notes of violets combined with hints of red fruits, such as raspberry and cherry, not least the hints of wild berries such as blackberry. Also interesting is the spiciness, reminiscent of cloves and some peppery notes. On the palate, the freshness combined with the minerality is simply stunning. Harmonious, dry and savory. The tannin is notable.
James Suckling scored this 93 points saying, "Aromas of mixed forest berries and lovely herbal notes, such as anise, licorice and sage. Medium-bodied with a nice balance of fruit, lightly firm yet silky tannin and bright, citrusy acidity. Tight, focused finish with good length."
Jeb Dunnuck gave this 90 points saying, "A deep but transparent ruby/magenta, the 2020 Chianti Classico is fruity and primary, with aromas of mixed berries, licorice candy, olive, and wet stones. Medium-bodied and savory, it has plush, ripe tannins, and although it's not pronounced, it retains good freshness and has a clean finish, with a lovely texture throughout. It is a very charming wine, though it has very well-detailed underpinnings with a mineral-tinged finish to enjoy over the next few years. I liked it quite a lot."
