About Giant Steps 2019 Chardonnay, Wombat Creek Vyd., Yarra Valley

When John Coltrane split with Miles Davis in the late 50's, he wasted little time releasing his visionary Giant Steps album. Winemaker (and equally successful brew master) Phil Sexton was inspired by the album and Coltrane’s foresight. When Sexton sold his Devil’s Lair vineyard in Margaret River to relocate and replant in the Yarra Valley, he named his wine in Coltrane’s honor. Sexton chose Yarra Valley because of his admiration for the long aging and fine boned wines produced by the new generation of wine growers reestablishing this historic wine region.

Giant Steps has forged a reputation for delivering some of Australia’s most consistent, over-performing, varietal wines reflected by its ongoing, praise-worthy global acclaim including being a six times Wine & Spirits Top 100 Wineries of the Year, 2013 – 2018. Giant Steps focuses primarily on the distinctive expression of single vineyard sites in the Yarra Valley.

This wine is Chardonnay sourced from the Wombat Creek Vineyard. The Wombat Creek Vineyard is the highest altitude vineyard in the Yarra Valley, making it an ideal location for the production of extreme cool climate wines. The vineyard was originally planted in 1988. The underlying ferrous (red) based volcanic soil and rock produce a distinctively soft yet long and firm palate.

Grapes were 100% handpicked with the whole bunch pressed. Fermentation was with indigenous yeasts in 500L French puncheons. The wine aged for 10 months in new and used French oak – 20% new, 80% older. New oak was Taransaud and D&J.

James Suckling scored this 97 points saying "There’s striking freshness of lemon and yellow grapefruit here with a chalky, stony, flinty edge. The fresh fruit carries subtly spicy oak nicely. There are grapefruit and fresh yellow-peach flavors in abundance. This carries energetic, acidity-fueled drive and delivers impressive balance, as well as length. So long and juicy. Drink or hold."

Wine Spectator scored this 94 points saying "This expressive white showcases a mouthwatering mix of tahini, fresh ginger, lemon zest, pear and green apple flavors on a juicy, sleek frame, with remarkable precision and intensity on the finish, oozing with freshness and vibrancy. Drink now through 2032."
