About Godspeed Vineyards 2014 Chardonnay, Mt Veeder Napa Valley

Godspeed is an artisan grower in the Mount Veeder Appellation of Napa Valley situated at an altitude of 1500 ft. The vineyard is the project of the Larry Stricker family. Larry is an acclaimed architect who has created world class resort hotels, including the Phoenician in Scottsdale, Arizona; the Marriott Desert Springs Resort and a series of Hawaiian properties including the Halekulani, Kahala Resort, Kapalua Bay Hotel and the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel. At his Mount Veeder estate, he has over time sold his world-class fruit to recognized wineries including Robert Craig, Bremmer, William Hill, Newton & Beringer. Since 1990 he has taken advantage of his exceptional vineyard by bottling half his production under his own label.

For this wine Larry teamed up with the iconic winemaker Chris Corley of Monticello vineyards, a vineyard Larry also sold fruit to. You know when you have great winemakers behind a winery project like this, you have something really special. Ed Sbragia himself (famed Beringer winemaker) noted that “year after year the fruit from Godspeed justifies my passion… There’s an intensity and concentration to the grapes that practically jumps out of the crusher, and with careful handling, this intensity translates to a wine of enormous depth and richness.”

The wine is whole barrel pressed with barrel fermentation and no malolactic fermentation was used. It was aged for 22 months in 80% neutral oak and 20% new French Oak. An intense nose of well developed tropical fruit hits you first with grilled pineapple followed by baked pear and a lemon-lime peel note. Wonderfully balanced on the palate with flavors of creme brulee, guava, toasted almond and a hint of butterscotch come through on the elegant and perfectly aged finish. A complex wine that is drinking in its prime window!
