About Groth 2015 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville, Napa Valley

This is the eleventh vintage from Groth's historic 28 acre Reserve vineyard after a replanting of the vineyards took it out of production for five vintages. The rootstock, clones, trellising system and vine row orientation have proven to be the perfect combination of variables for the Groth Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. Location is the paramount factor providing the perfect blend of diurnal temperatures, rainfall amounts and unique soil profiles for growing superb Cabernet.

Clusters are night harvested, allowing the fruit to remain cool for sorting and cold soak. Grape bunches are hand sorted, then de-stemmed without crushing; the berries go through a second hand sort, making sure only the best berries go into each small fermentation lot. The fermentation was carried out over a ten day period in small, temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks at an average temperature of 80 ̊ F. After fermentation the wine is racked barrel to barrel and aged for 22 months in 100% new French oak, followed by over a year of bottle-aging. The 2015 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon shows the intrinsic black stone fruit nuances and the elegant tannin structure that define our Oakville, Napa Valley-floor Cabernet.

Wine & Spirits Magazine scored this 94 points saying "Groth’s Reserve Block runs north from Oakville Cross Road along the eastern bank of Conn Creek, just under 28 acres replanted in 1999 and 2001. The vines produced a bold, luscious beauty in 2015, defining Oakville in its rich dimensions, held in check by proper harmonies in the tannins (think Presbyterian church music, clear and resolute). The fresh fruit flavors of blueberries and plums have exceptional length, ample and energized, while the warmth of the wine begins to show after several days open. Lovely to drink on release, this should develop well over the next several years."

Tasting Panel Magazine scored this 93 points saying "Smooth and creamy with luscious, tangy style, this is a long, linear wine with subtle elegance and fnesse from a family-owned and -operated winery."

Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored this 93 points saying "Plum, clove and tobacco mark this distinct reserve-worthy red, made from the producer’s own estate-reserve block. Inviting floral aromatics entice equally, underlining its understated elegance and class. Black licorice lines thick, grippy tannin and oak, suggesting ample time for cellaring."

Vinous scored this 95 points saying "The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is fabulous. Rich and unctuous in the glass, but without losing its classic feel, the Reserve conveys the richness of the vintage nicely. Black cherry, crème de cassis, smoke, licorice and sweet spice infuse the resonant, super-inviting finish. What a beautiful wine this is."
