About Hess Collection 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon, Mt. Veeder, Napa Valley
Mount Veeder is distinguished among Napa's mountain districts for having the highest elevation, coolest growing season and geologically diverse soils. Hess Collection Mount Veeder Cab is an expression of the unique mountain climate it comes from, sourced entirely from Hess' Veeder Hills Vineyard. The elevation of this vineyard ranges from 600-1,120 feet. This 2018 Cab is a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot aged 22 months in 80% new French oak barrels.
Wine Spectator scored this 93 points saying "Lush and deeply fruity, with crushed plum, mulled blackberry and açaí berry compote flavors that meld nicely together, while melted black licorice, black tea and mulling spice notes add range and detail. Features a lushness that makes this approachable now, but shows a strong underlying iron spine that will let this evolve with cellaring. Best from 2023 through 2036."
Wine Enthusiast Magazine awarded this a Cellar Selection and scored it 91 points saying "Thick and earthy in flavors of coffee bean, tobacco, cedar and sage, this wine offers densely packed concentration and structure, intensely built for aging. Blended with 22% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot, it will find its groove best between 2028 and 2033."
