About Hetszolo Aszu 5 Puttonyos

The Hetszolo estate, now owned by the legendary Cos d'Estournel, was meticulously created by its founders in 1502 from the region’s seven most outstanding plots, hence the name Hét Szölö, or “seven plots of vineyard” in Hungarian. Previous owners include the highly prestigious House of Habsburg: Tokaj-Hétszölö became a Royal Imperial Estate in 1711 before being recognized as a premier grand cru some years later. Against all odds, the estate remained the property of the Austro-Hungarian Empire for nearly two centuries. After some upheaval in the twentieth century, Tokaj-Hétszölö was acquired by Michel Reybier in 2009. Their core philosophy is based on the consciousness of our impact on it’s environment. 55 hectares became organic certified in 2015 and in order to offer the highest quality, we only work with our own grapes.

“We do believe that with organic approach we can protect the vitality of the vines and so have better quality now and in the future. In order to be able to communicate this philosophy we only use our own grapes to create the Hétszőlő wines.” (Gergely Makai, technical director)

Winemaker notes Very rich in nose where we find apricot, citrus and some dried cantaloupe and other tropical fruits too. We get the same fruitiness on palate along with richness, complexity and with extreme high but elegant acidity. We can feel that it has lots of potential.

97 Points Vert deVin

The wine shows a deep amber colour. On the nose there are complex notes of buckwheat honey, dried apricots, a touch of varnish, old wood, a touch of black tea, candied orange, ginger and spices. The palate is dense and concentrated, with very well-integrated sweetness balanced by the piercing, stimulating acidity. A very vertical and linear wine which feels almost off-dry despite the high sugar content. The flavours open up in layers and stay long. A very strong saline, mineral, iodine note on the finish. Excellent balance, gorgeous wine.

The 2010 Tokaji Aszu 5-Puttonyos had been bottled just a fortnight before I tasted it. Considering the growing season, this has an impressive bouquet with what seems like plenty of Aszu character. The palate is well-balanced with a zesty opening, plenty of Clementine, peach and apricot notes. The acidity is very racy (12.5 grams per liter), that neatly balanced the 152 grams per liter residual sugar. Vibrant and very focused, this could be one of the best Aszu wines in what was a difficult vintage. It will be not be commercialized for several years, but watch out for this when eventually released.
