Here's an exciting find. In 1973 with remarkable prescience Paul Segas purchased vineyard property in Napa and Sonoma. In not too long he was selling his grapes to Chateau Montelena, Bouchaine, Pine Ridge, Robert Mondavi, Joseph Phelps, Domaine Chandon and Mumm Napa Valley to name a few. He teamed up with Silver Oak alum Dave Cofran to start Highlands Winery in 2001 with the vision of using ultra premium Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel grapes to produce world class wines.
Their wines are only produced in very small lots, in fact only 282 cases of this wine were produced. But come to think of it, how much Zinfandel do you think is growing in the Cabernet Mecca of Oakville? Not much and what that says is that this must be some pretty outstanding Zin for it not to have been grafted over to Cab...and it is.
From the near-perfect 2016 vintage this Zin, aged 22 months in 33% new French and American oak, is packed with flavor and nuance. A beautiful deep berry color and an aromatic nose filled with cassis, blackberries and hints of smoke, pepper and toast. The palate fleshes out with juicy blackberry, pomegranate and light citrus notes, along with more spice and a long, soft silky finish completes this fresh and zesty Zin. Again less than 300 cases were made so it's very limited. We're offering a special discounted price to our customers for a limited time so please don't miss this chance to drink an Oakville Zin that could make you forget Cab...at least for a while.
