About Hindsight Estate 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

Here is a screaming deal on a supremely high pedigree Napa Cab! The winemaking 'dream team' that crafted this 2015 Hindsight Estate Calistoga Napa Cabernet explains why this wine is so phenomenally fantastic.

Michael Weis, whose epic career in wine stretches nearly 50 years, is the Director of Winemaking at Hindsight Vineyards. He is best known for his long tenure at Groth Vineyards and Winery in Oakville, Napa Valley. He recently retired from that position, after having spent 26 years helping to build one of the most noted and respected wine brands in California. He had already established himself as a talented winemaker with positions at both Robert Mondavi Winery and Vichon Winery prior to joining Groth. Under his leadership, Michael led projects to replant all the Estate vineyards and to expand and modernize the winery in order to handle the replanted blocks. Groth Vineyards was the first US wine to earn a 100 point score from Robert Parker, and Michael’s wines have appeared many, many times on the Wine Spectator Top 100 list with several top 10 finishes. His wines consistently rank 95+ points in the major trade publications.

Jac Cole, a master winemaker who was cellar master at Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, and winemaker at Charles Krug and Cliff Lede Winery, assisted him on this project. These are wineries that need no introduction, but as a refresher it was the Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon that won the 1976 Judgement of Paris wine tasting and put California on the global wine map. Sufficed to say, with these two working together they have put together an incredible Cabernet at an extremely affordable price point!

2015  was possibly the most anticipated vintage of the century. Unusually cool spring weather, combined with wind limited fruit formation and cluster size, resulted in lower yields with a tremendous concentration of flavors and aromas, according the Weis. Low yield in their Estate vineyard due to cold weather in late spring produced an intense wine with exceptionally concentrated characters. Toasty oak notes nuance the lush and lingering finish accomplished by nearly two years of aging in French oak barrels.

The Winemakers tout this wine as having... 'Classic ruby-garnet tones dominate the color of this wine typical of a well extracted Cabernet in an intensely concentrated vintage. A bouquet of exotic spices with notes of black currants and Madagascar vanilla pervade the wine’s aromatics. Ripe plums and blackberry flavors intertwine with notes of violets and cacao to produce a Cabernet that is both intriguing and captivating.'

Wine Enthusiast boasted 'This is a crowd-pleasing, approachable wine with a bit of age on it that features ripe black- and red-cherry fruit, baked plum, baking spice and oak. The texture is soft and supple.'
