"Inherit The Sheep" is a whimsical name for a wonderful wine. When former President of Jackson Family Wines Clay Gregory, decided to buy a ranch so he could plant grapes and make some wine in Napa Valley, he was taken by surprise when the the former sheep ranch still had sheep when he moved in. Fortunately he was able to keep his inherited sheep away from the grapes on his 1.8 acre Coombsville estate vineyard. He planted the vines at a high density providing competition among them and ensuring low yields with high levels of concentration and character.
For this 2013, grapes were sorted by hand into an ultra-gentle de-stemmer followed by a four-day cold soak. Fermentation on the skins lasted up to 22 days and then was gently basket pressed to control tannin expression. The wine aged aged 100% new French oak barrels from Seguin-Moreau for 20 months and was bottled unfiltered. Only 250 cases of this rich, ripe Cab were produced and we were very lucky to get our hands on a a few.
2013 was of course a nearly perfect vintage and this wine is robust but with a supple mouthfeel and a dense core of concentrated flavors. The nose brings black cherry, black currants, cocoa and espresso bean. On the palate the bold fruit leads the way with cassis, cherry, mocha, toasted nuts and hints of baking spice. This has the backbone and intensity to age for 10+ years and continue to deliver more complexity. The great news is we're offering this banging, single vineyard, boutique Napa Cab at a tremendously attractive discounted price to our Wine Express customers. Don't let anyone pull the wool over your eyes, grab this awesome Napa Cab while we're still full of sheep!
