On Jerry Lohr’s 80th birthday J. Lohr launched the ultimate, limited release red wine in its portfolio, the 2013 J. Lohr Signature Cabernet Sauvignon. J. Lohr Signature Cabernet represents the culmination of their Cabernet program in Paso Robles, and the realization of Jerry’s long-standing vision to release a Cabernet Sauvignon that could compete with the finest Cabernets of Paso Robles, Napa Valley, and other celebrated, global winegrowing regions.
Sourced from the Beck Vineyard, in the Creston District of Paso Robles, a unique site perched 1,700 feet above the early morning fog. Its calcareous soils and cooling afternoon winds are perfect for growing structured, nuanced, low-yield Cabernet Sauvignon. The Clone 337 Cabernet from this estate ripens evenly and early with excellent color, purity of fruit, and mature phenolics. The hand-harvested grapes were berry-sorted into six-ton open top tanks for fermentation. Maceration took place on the skins for five days, before early pressing to limit tannin extraction. Aged 17 months in 100% new French oak from coopers Demptos, Marcel Cadet, Nadalie, and Saint Martin.
Tasting Panel scored this 98 Points saying "From the steeply sloped, high-elevation Beck Vineyard in Paso Robles’ Creston District, this smallproduction style-setter—released on January 1 in honor of Jerry Lohr’s 85th birthday—is on top of its game. To quote CEO Steve Lohr, “The 2018 J. Lohr Signature Cabernet Sauvignon is the culmination of everything we have learned about winegrowing. . . . It sets a new bar for Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon.” Aged 20 months in 100% new French oak, it contains 7% Saint-Macaire (along with 1% Malbec, which explains some of its brightness); the rare Bordeaux variety is known for its savory side as well as its color and density. Bold notes of cherry liqueur kick off a broad, generous wash of red fruit with an inner light; the palate is concentrated with notes of roasted coffee, sweet tobacco, and balsamic."
Wine Enthusiast scored this 96 Points saying "Toasty aromas of charred pecan, cocoa nib and espresso give a savory edge to the blackberry-paste base of this luxury-level bottling. Smoothed-out tannins carry hearty flavors of coffee, cocoa and coconut on the palate, where dark fruit flavors carry deep into the finish. Cellar Selection."
