About J. Lohr 2021 South Ridge Syrah

Wine Enthusiast Magazine #1 Best Buy of 2023!

The J. Lohr Estates South Ridge Syrah is grown on a combination of lime-laden and gravelly soils, which rein in Syrah’s rangy growth potential. Vines from our two estate ranches in the cooler Adelaida District of Paso Robles infuse the blend with fresh blackberry flavors, aromatic white pepper, and sandalwood notes. Our Syrah plantings in the the warmer Paso Robles Estrella District tend toward black cherry and black tea leaf flavors. The balance from our high elevation Beck Vineyard in the Creston sub-AVA brings exceptionally dark color, intense concentration, and blue fruit notes.

The blend is 92% Syrah, 5% Grenache Noir, 1% Viognier, 1% Roussanne, 1% Mourvèdre and is deeply colored with vibrant purple and magenta hues. Varietal aromas of black cherry and fresh blueberry are accented by black tea, bergamot, and lilac. The juicy and spicy structure of this northern Rhône cultivar is lengthened and lifted by the inclusion of Grenache, Mourvèdre, Roussanne, and Viognier. Try with spicy chicken fajitas or oven-baked baby back ribs.

Wine Enthusiast awarded this as "#1 BEST BUY" in their Top 100 list of Best Buys and scored it 93 Points saying, "This is a very satisfying Syrah for a rather stunning price. Lush and generous aromas of baked berry, hot spice cake and a touch of crushed rock show on the nose. The palate is brooding in cassis, boysenberry pudding and baking spice flavors, framed by impressively deep tannins."

Tasting Panel scored this 93 Points saying, "You would be hard-pressed to find another Syrah at this price with such admirable qualities: Grapes grown on lime-laden and gravelly soils exude texture, color, and flavor that wines four times the cost are lucky to achieve.Showing hearty notes of violets, slate, and balsamic, the palate of this concentrated red is lined in satin, with sumptuous flavors of dark chocolate, sweet earth, white pepper, and blueberry."
