About Paul Jaboulet Aine Domaine de Thalabert 2010 Crozes Hermitage Syrah

Paul Jaboulet Aîné has been a trend-setting grower and shipper in the Rhône since 1834. The Jaboulet company was founded by Antoine Jaboulet, and his twin sons, Paul and Henri continued to expand the family business. The elder son ("aîné" in French), Paul, established the company in its present form and gave it his own name. Since then, the company has been run by successive generations of sons from that side of the Jaboulet family.

Thalabert is the first ever vineyard owned by Paul Jaboulet – purchased in 1834, which also holds the distinction as the oldest vineyard of the appellation. These wines are considered the benchmark for Crozes-Hermitages with the ability to age for decades. The wine is produced from grapes that come from 60-80 year old vines and vineyards that are biodynamically farmed. Vines grown on pebbly terraces that are glacial in origin, with the bedrock close to the topsoil. These small, round pebbles store heat during the day and release it at night, providing optimum and regular maturity. Very low yields of 25 hl/ha for this Syrah based wine and it is aged in French oak, 20% of it being new barrels.

I've been lucky enough to have consumed over a case of the 2010 Crozes-Hermitage Domaine De Thalabert, and it's a brilliant Crozes that's drinking beautifully today. Every bit as good as the 2009 (but a notch behind the 2015), this beauty offers a classic, meaty, gamey, powerful style as well as full-bodied richness, lots of darker currant and smoked black fruits, some truffly earth, and peppery bouquet garni-like nuances. It has another decade of longevity. - October 2023

The 2010 Crozes-Hermitage Domaine de Thalabert, which I raved about last year, is slightly better than their brilliant 2009. It boasts a dense purple color along with a beautiful perfume of camphor, licorice, forest floor, black currants and Christmas fruitcake. With tremendous intensity, full body and supple tannins, it should drink well for 10-15 years, perhaps longer where well-stored. This cuvee is always one of the best buys in the Northern Rhone. - Robert Parker

Inky ruby. Intense blackberry and anise aromas are complemented by notes of candied flowers and smoky minerals. Silky and seamless on the palate, offering sweet dark berry and violet pastille flavors and a hint of cracked pepper. Closes energetic and very long, with slow-building tannins adding grip.
