About La Craie 2019 Pouilly Fume
The white wine from the village of Pouilly-sur-Loire has the unique moniker of Pouilly-Fume. Many think that the "Fume" refers to a smoky quality in the wine, however the real origin of the name is morning fog in the vineyards that billows like smoke through the valley. This wine like it's close neighbor Sancerre is 100% Sauvignon Blanc, however, this is a select bottling of old vines grapes by the Jean-Pierre Bailly. La Craie means "the chalk" in French and is a reference to the chalky y soils in the Loire Valley that these grapes are so well suited to. The grapes take on delectable herb and citrus notes and considerable complexity.
Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored this 90 points saying "This softly textured wine hints at herbal flavors, with touches of spiciness. Typical of Pouilly Fumé, it is still young at this stage, but should open into white and citrus fruitiness. Drink from 2021."
