About L'Aventure 2017 Optimus, Paso Robles

Stephan Asseo, owner and winemaker at L'Aventure Winery, began making wine in 1982, following his education at L'Ecole Oenologique de Macon, Burgundy, France. In that same year, Stephan established Domaine de Courteillac in Bordeaux. He and his family later purchased Chateau Fleur Cardinal and Chateau Robin in the Cotes de Castillion, Bordeaux. Over the next 15 years, Stephan developed into an artisan winemaker of fastidious craftsmanship and gained a reputation as a maverick vigneron.

In 1998 after searching for over a year among the world's great wine regions for the next chapter in his winemaking career he founded L'Aventure in Paso Robles. The rolling topography of the Santa Lucia Mountain Range, the deep calcareous soils, and the maritime influences of the renowned Templeton Gap all combine to produce a world class wine country, with the potential to craft some of the world's greatest blends.

This wine is Optimus, a perfect example of Bordeaux meets the Rhone. The grapes are sourced entirely from the estate L'Aventure Vineyard at very low yield of just 2.5 tons per acre. The blend is 49% Syrah, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot. The wine aged for 14 months in 60% new French oak and 40% 1-year-old French oak and was bottled without fining or filtering.

Jeb Dunnuck scored this 94 points saying "Starting with the 2017s and with what could be considered the entry-level wine from Stephan Asseo’s L’Aventure estate, the 2017 Optimus is based on 49% Syrah, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Petit Verdot that was brought up in 60% new French oak. It reveals a vivid purple color as well as notes blackberries, ground herbs, caramelized meat, and hints of chocolate. Beautifully balanced and full-bodied, it has a seamless, incredibly delicious style and is a brilliant introduction to the wines of this estate. It will keep for upwards of a decade."

The Wine Advocate scored this 93 points saying "Blended of 49% Syrah, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot, the deep ruby colored 2017 Optimus opens with aromas of fresh fruits—wild blackberries, crushed blueberries and sour cherries—along with loamy earth, touches of cured meats, saline and olives, very fresh and crunchy on the nose. Medium to full-bodied and silky, it has great intensity and interplay of red, black and blue fruits with spices and savory touches. It has a very classy frame of finely pixelated tannins and wonderful freshness, finishing long and lifted. This shows excellent restraint! It’s drinking beautifully now but will reward another 3-5 years in the cellar."
