Here is a second wine of the great Second Growth Bordeaux, Leoville Las Cases is a wine that experts consider comparable to First Growths like Latour and Mouton. In certain years, several vineyard plots are uprooted and replanted. As they are coming into production instead of going into the Grand Vin the Chateau created this second wine from these younger vines. The Petit Lion shares the philosophy of its elder sibling; it is vinified and aged in order to preserve its fresh, ripe fruit and made to be more accessible with a significant proportion of Merlot used in the blend.
52% Cabernet Sauvignon 38% Merlot 5% Cabernet Franc 5% Petit Verdot, aged in 22% new oak barrels. Particularly in a monumental vintage like 2010 when everything went right, to find an affordable wine like this from Leoville Las Cases is truly a rare treat.
Wine Spectator scored it 94 points saying "Sappy with lots of kirsch violet and red currant notes. Very lively acidity drives the finish. Tightly wound for a second wine with serious acidity."
