About Le Roi des Pierres 2021 Sancerre
Le Roi des Pierres is a cuvée made by Adrien Gaudiat who works as a winemaker for a prominent family in Sancerre near the Monts Damnés, the most iconic vineyard in Sancerre, whom also gave him access to some prime vineyards in the village of Saint-Gemme.
Le Roi des Pierre’s (“King of Stones”) Sancerre is crafted from grapes grown is the rare silex soil, representing only 15% of the all the terroir in Sancerre.. Silex is composed of flint over a clay and limestone base and has proven to produce distinctive wines with an extraordinary ability to age. Vines range in age from 20 to 40 years and are trellised in a simple Guyot system with up to 40% situated on steep slopes.
The Sauvignon Blanc grapes were handpicked in September. The grapes were then transported to the gravity flow cellar and underwent a gentle pressing in a pneumatic press. The alcoholic fermentation was conducted in thermo regulated stainless steel tanks (59-64°F) followed by five months of maturation on fine lees.
This wine opens with mineral, flint-like notes characteristic of its terroir, it immediately develops aromatics reminiscent of nectarine and blood orange. The intense and delicious nose also distills floral notes (acacia flower) while preserving its minerality. This Sancerre seduces on the palate with its roundness and opulent ripe citrus notes, while retaining the freshness and minerality typical of flint Terroir. On the palate, the wine has a crispy finish with lingering spicy notes (white pepper and ginger) that will make you salivate!
