About Louis Martini 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon, Monte Rosso Vyd., Sonoma Valley

Located on the southwest side of the Mayacamas Range, is the 250 acre Monte Rosso Vineyard. First planted in 1886 it was sold to Louis Martini in 1938 and he planted the first Cab vines. This vineyard historically produces wines of brilliant acidity and distinct notes of spice due to the volcanic influence and minerality in the homogenous Red Hill Loam soil, the southern facing aspect of the vineyard, and the 1300’ elevation. This gives the wine impeccable balance and brilliance. Today Brenae Royal, a Wine Enthusiast 40 under 40 awardee, manages the vineyard with utmost care and attention. This wine from the superb 2016 vintage is an outstanding offering.

James Suckling scored this 97 points saying "This is a reserved and tight Monte Rosso with bark and currant character. Wet earth. Full-bodied, balanced and extremely long. Fantastic, subtle finish. Reminds me of old Louis Martini Mountain cabs. Drink after 2022."

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate scored this 95+ saying "Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Rosso Vineyard comes galloping out of the glass with notes of crème de cassis, warm plums, cast-iron pan and bouquet garni, plus touches of lavender and olives. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is chock-full of muscular fruit, framed by firm, grainy tannins, finishing with an herbal lift."

Wine Enthusiast Magazine awarded this a Cellar Selection and scored it 94 points saying "Sumptuous, integrated and softly layered, this blockbuster wine from the historic site is intriguing in iron and crushed rock. The fruit is black and brambly—a mix of cherry, berry and currant dusted in cocoa powder. This will do well in the cellar. Enjoy from 2026–2031."
