About Marchese Antinori 2018 Chianti Classico Riserva, Tignanello Estate

This Chianti is a signature wine for Antinori and is consistently one of the most outstanding wines from the Chianti Classico region. Since 2011, it has been produced exclusively from a selection of the grapes of the Tignanello estate. Upon arriving in the cellars, the grapes are destemmed and the berries are carefully selected on sorting tables. The grapes are handled with the express purpose of preserving all their aromas and components; highly important both for the Sangiovese and for the Cabernet as well.

Once in the stainless steel fermenting tanks, the fermentation itself lasts approximately a week and is followed by a nine or ten-day period of skin contact. After being run off its skins, the wine goes immediately into small oak barrels, principally of French oak. Still separated on the basis of its vineyard source, the wine is aged for approximately a year in French and Hungarian oak barrels. At the end of the aging period, the wine is bottled and given additional twelve-month aging in bottle in preparation for release. 90% Sangiovese and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Wine Spectator scored this 93 points saying "Cherry, black currant and raspberry flavors are at the heart of this red, flanked by vanilla, toasty oak, mineral and tobacco elements. There is a beam of ripe fruit and dusty tannins right through the long finish. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot."

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate scored this 93 points saying "This wine is made exclusively with fruit from the gorgeous Tenuta Tignanello in San Casciano Val di Pesa (home to its namesake wine Tignanello, and Solaia) and sees mostly Sangiovese blended with a smaller part Cabernet Sauvignon and other complementary grapes. The Marchesi Antinori 2018 Chianti Classico Riserva Marchese Antinori vaunts a smooth and silky personality with ample berry definition and brightness. The previous 2017 vintage revealed more black and purple fruits because of the scorching hot and dry summer that year, but this wine from the cooler 2018 growing season focuses on red raspberry and cherry instead. That fruit is framed by light spice (from Hungarian and French oak) and licorice."

James Suckling scored this 92 points saying "This is very lively and energetic with fine tannins and a long, focused finish. Aromatic and bright with berries, plums and flowers. Medium body. with savory acidity and a long finish. 90% sangiovese with some cabernet and merlot. Drink now."
