Marchesi de' Frescobaldi is one of Italy's most historic wine producers, dating to the 1300s. It is also one of the most significant producers in Italy, with nine different estates—and roughly 2,500 acres—in Tuscany.
This wine from the outstanding 2016 vintage, is produced by the Frescobaldi family as a special private reserve. It originates from the oldest vines of Castello Nipozzano estate, which have deep roots and produce low yields of concentrated grapes. This highly complex, harmonious wine is matured for 24 months in oak barrels in accordance with the ancient Tuscan tradition. Sangiovese is complemented with native varieties Malvasia Nera, Colorino and Canaiolo. Only 750 cases were produced.
In The Decanter World Wine Awards this received a 91 points score. They said "A sweet fruit sensation on the nose reminding cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg. The mouthfeel is textural and driven by acidity."
The Wine Spectator scored this 90 points saying "This rich red is full of dark fruit flavors of plum, black currant and blueberry, backed by a spine of stiff tannins. This is fresh and stays balanced, with a lightly astringent finish. Drink now through 2030. 750 cases made."
