McKahn Family Cellars is a Napa based winery established in 2014 that specializes in Rhone varietals from vineyards around Northern California. Winemaker Charles McKahn started his career as Assistant Winemaker at Chappellet Winery then became Winemaker at William Harrison Winery.They are not beholden to any single appellation, and will search near and far for a vineyard that produces fruit to meet their high standards.
California is blessed with some of the most diverse terroir in the world, and their wines reflect that wealth of diversity from the Russian River Valley to the Napa Valley; from the Sierra Foothills to the Livermore Valley. They value family, friendship and tradition, and their wines are crafted with the intention of being shared among loved ones. They respect the millennia old tradition of winegrowing, and take every precaution necessary to ensure each of their wines is unique to their specific terroir and varietal.
This red blend is inspired by the family's annual lake trips of their youth with the hopes that those who enjoy this wine create unforgettable memories with their loved ones while drinking it as the McKahn family did. Aromas consist of dried cherry, bing cherry, red currant, bramble and allspice. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and brightly flavored of cotton candy and strawberry preserve, finishing with soft, supple tannins.
The blend of this 2020 is made of 60% Grenache, 38% Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec.
Wine Enthusiast scored this 91 points saying, "Allow this big, bold blend of Grenache, Petite Verdot and Malbec to open for at least 30 to 40 minutes for best enjoyment. It's worth the wait for its concentrated aromas and flavors of black plum, currant, blueberry, bramble, fennel, anise, clove, nutmeg and leather to truly come to life. The palate is driven by a firm, structural tannic texture, modest acidity, generous alcohol and a lingering finish."
