About Mollydooker 2020 The Boxer, Shiraz, South Australia

A wonder from down under, Mollydooker wines were launched with the 2004 vintage and were an instant cult classic, producing broodingly rich, decadent offerings that are snapped up as quickly as they are put on the shelf. Grapes for this year's The Boxer come from prime vineyard blocks including the Mollydooker home vineyard in McLaren Vale with some additional fruit from Langhorn Creek all in South Australia. The slightly cooler climate grapes from Langhorne add a floral lift and elegance. All of the grapes are sustainably grown. Parcels were vinified separately, barrel fermented and aged in 100% American oak, using 43% new, 35% one year old, and 22% two year old barrels.

Wine Spectator scored this 92 points saying "Black licorice, kirsch and Kalamata olive notes are dense and dark, but give way to plush blackberry, blueberry and Earl Grey tea accents. This harmonious version gains complexity on the finish. Drink now."

The Wine Advocate scored this 90 points saying "despite the warmer vintage, the 2020 The Boxer Shiraz is slightly lower in alcohol than the following 2021 (the product of a cooler vintage—go figure). Here, the 2020 Boxer is more balanced and settled, and whether that is due to an extra year in bottle or the regional sourcing for fruit (methinks a combo of the two), the wine is showing really well. This is a big volume wine—the biggest in the portfolio—but drinks better than that. The immaculate and highly organized winery, which I visited in June, may have something to do with that. Best After 2022."
