About Muri Gries 2022 Pinot Grigio, Alto Adige
In 1845 the Benedictines moved from Muri in Switzerland to Gries in South Tyrol, where the order took over the Augustinian monastery. In so doing, they inherited a long tradition of wine-growing, which they nurtured in the spirit of a symbiosis of monastery, winery and estate that is still very much in evidence today. The result, in the 21st century, is a range of top-quality wines from MURI-GRIES like the Abtei Muri line, which has been produced from selected grapes from the very best sites since 1989.
The single-site principle offers full transparency with regard to a wine’s origins and quality - from the vine to the glass. It guarantees that a vintage is made exclusively from the best grapes from one and the same site. With the targeted development of their top-quality sites in Gries-Moritzing and Klosteranger, they produce wines that are the consummate expression of the quality and typical character of the Lagrein grape variety. Here Lagrein achieves its full potential in wines that are truly distinctive and expressive. MURI-GRIES is thus ushering in a new era for Lagrein wines – with the single site principle as the platform for their passion for Lagrein.
The 2022 Pinot Grigio pours a straw yellow color with green reflexes. It has a tempting bouquet of fresh fruits, ripe William pears, herbs - including mint and melissa -, and tea and is spicy and slighty buttery and nutty. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and well-structured with a long and slightly bitter finish.
Vinous scored this 91 points saying, "The 2022 Pinot Grigio opens with a minty flourish, blending crushed green apples with white smoke and ginger. This opens with a lovely inner sweetness complicated by candied lime and spice as crisp green apple adds contrast toward the close. It finishes with tension and medium length, leaving a salty sensation and sour green melon suggestions. The 2022 is a lovely Pinot Grigio with remarkable value..."
