About Napa Cellars 2017 Zinfandel, Napa Valley
Started by Rombauer back in the 80's Napa Cellars is now owned by the Trinchero Family Estate. As a result they are able to source premium Napa fruit from their almost 300 acres of estate vineyards in Napa Valley. That's really what makes this wine stand out and why it's so good. Zinfandel used to be much more widely planted in Napa Valley, today it only totals roughly 2% of total acreage but there are still some prime blocks, so grapes for this Zin are carefully hand-selected from vineyards in St. Helena, Yountville, Oak Knoll and Calistoga where they've located complex and concentrated fruit.
After a three day cold soak, designed to extract color from the skins, the grapes are pressed early to avoid extracting harsh tannins. A blend of 93% Zinfandel and 6% Petite Sirah and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon, following a maceration period lasting from 12 to 18 days, the lots are aged in 28% new French and American oak barrels for 17 months.
This Zin shows aromas of fresh plum, dark cherry, dark brambly fruits; boysenberry and blackberry with hints of spice, gingerbread, clove and mocha. On the palate, intense flavors of cherry, plum, boysenberry and lingering toasted notes are threaded with hints of gingerbread. This wine is weighty and juicy with balanced acidity accenting soft and supple tannins.
