About Newton 2014 Unfiltered Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
Newton Vineyards is one of the first wineries to be established in the Spring Mountain region of Napa Valley. Over three decades they have produced consistently fine wines building a strong reputation for quality as well as value. A pioneer of unfiltered wines in California, their Unfiltered Cabernet is always a full-bodied and distinctive wine. A blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot, 2% Malbec and 1% Merlot. Once harvested, the grapes were sorted using an optical sorter that inspects individual berries to ensure uniform, perfect ripeness. The must then underwent five days of cold maceration followed by seven days of fermentation. The wine then rested on the skins for up to one month to develop additional complexity before being pressed and aged for 14 months in French oak barrels, 30% new. Robert Parker scored this 93 points saying "A blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Merlot, Newton's 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Unfiltered has a dense ruby/purple color, a beautiful nose of blackcurrants, licorice, camphor and incense. There's some spice box and subtle background oak as well. It is medium to full-bodied, elegant, and like most of Newton's wines, seems to represent a beautiful crossover between the elegance and finesse of a great Bordeaux and the ripeness, power and exuberance of a Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink it over the next 20+ years."
