About Neyers 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

A Unique First Bottling.
The Neyers Vineyards in Conn Valley rise from 400 feet elevation to over 1,000 feet elevation, and the soil changes from gravel-loam to rocky basalt. This variation gives Bruce Neyers a variety of characters in his estate fruit. Nonetheless, he became interested in working with Cabernet Sauvignon grapes grown further to the south, especially in the cool temperature belt of southeastern Napa Valley near Oak Knoll Road.

In 2017, he arranged to purchase Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from Ron Smith’s 25-year-old vines in this area, a mile or so south of the Stag’s Leap AVA. These are vines grown in conditions even cooler than Stag’s Leap, thus exaggerating the length of the growing season and extending the fruit hang time. He added to this wine about 5% Merlot grown on the Johnson Vineyard, an equally cool-weather parcel in nearby Coombsville.

Fermented using native, wild yeast, and allowing for an extended maceration of up to 45 days contributed
further to the wine’s natural softness. the wine is aged 20 months in 30% new 60-gallon French oak barrels, then bottled without fining or filtration.

Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored this 93 points saying "Earthy layers of tobacco, cedar and blackberry highlight this elegant wine. With integrated tannins and oak, it is a seamless red that speaks softly yet with an enduring presence."

James Suckling scored this 92 points saying "Solid density of fruit for this vintage with blueberry and blackberry aromas and flavors. Medium to full body. Flavorful finish. Linear line of tannins and fruit through this. Very fine. Drink in 2022 and onwards."

Wine Spectator scored this "Fresh and focused, with a pretty beam of cassis and raspberry coulis notes, flecked with floral and anise accents. Judicious toast on the back end lets this play out nicely. Drink now through 2027."
