About Nickel & Nickel 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, State Ranch, Yountville, Napa Valley

Gil Nickel who founded Far Niente started Nickel & Nickel to produce extraordinary single vineyard Napa Valley Cabs. Each is a very low production wine from a unique sub-appellation in Napa Valley. This one comes from the State Ranch vineyard in Yountville, made famous by Beringer and now by Kapcsandy Estate. This wine, aged in French oak barrels for 16 months. Aged 18 months in French oak barrels, 57% new. Wine Review Online scored this 94 points saying "Distinctly different from Nickel & Nickels other single vineyard Cabernet bottlings, the one from State Ranch appears far more youthful at this stage with its tannic structure showing immediately. It has similar black fruit mixed with nuances of black olives and other savory notes, finishing with a beautiful bit of bitterness in the finish. The complexity is similarly enthralling, as with their other single vineyard Cabernets. Its the texture -- more apparent tannins at this stage -- that sets it apart. Still, its easy to recommend for the cellar because the balance suggests it will evolve nicely. If you cant wait and you want it with a meaty grilled steak this summer, which would not be a bad idea at all, open and decant it for a few hours before serving." and Wine Enthusiast Magazine named this a Cellar Selection and scored it 95 points saying "This wine comes alive in an expansive, fleshy palate of black pepper and black olive tapenade. Entirely varietal, it engages in a discussion of tenacious structure and high-cheekboned fruit, a melange of raspberry, cassis and blueberry compote. The aromas are enticing in garden violet. Enjoy now or cellar and enjoy best 2024 through 2034."
