About Nickel & Nickel 2015 Merlot, Harris Vyd., Oakville, Napa Valley

Gil Nickel who founded Far Niente Winery started Nickel & Nickel with the idea of producing just extraordinary single vineyard Napa Valley wines. Each one is a limited production wine from a unique sub-appellation in the Valley. Although Cabernet is king in Napa Valley, Merlot takes a close second, especially Merlot from a prime spot in Oakville. The 50-acre Harris Vineyard is located in western Oakville, just east of Branding Iron Vineyard. Nickel & Nickel's five acres are comprised of two blocks that offer a warm micro-climate with southern exposure and soil of gravelly clay loam that keeps the the vines cool. Maceration on the skins is limited to 7 days allowing an ideal balance of bright Merlot fruit and tannins.

The wine was aged 17 months in French oak barrels 52% new and the rest once-used. It shows fruity aromas of plums, blackberries and currants dusted with anise and brown sugar. The palate offers lively flavors of juicy berries and tart cherries with underlying hints of spices and toast. The texture is nicely rich with a coating midpalate that carries the youthful fruit into a supple finish and proving once and for all that the right grapes and thoughtful winemaking can produce Napa Merlot that's as exciting as Napa Cab. And at a more palatable price.
