About Orin Swift 2017 Machete Red Blend, California
David Swift Phinney founded Orin Swift Cellars in 1998; Orin is his father’s middle name and Swift is his mother’s maiden name. With two tons of zinfandel and not much else, he spent the next decade making wine for others as well as himself and grew the brand to what it is today. His wines are all very unique expressions in the art of winemaking with artistic labels that complete the package. Located in St. Helena in heart of Napa Valley he sources grapes from outstanding growers throughout the Valley and beyond.
This 2017 is sourced from all over the state, Machete is a culmination of bird-dogging some of the best Petite Sirah, Grenache and Syrah vineyards that produce rich and flavorful fruit. Blind tasted to determine the best quality to make it into Machete. Machete 2014 was Wine Spectator's #6 wine in its Top 100 of 2016.
The Wine Advocate scored this 91+ points saying "Composed of Petite Sirah, Syrah and Grenache, aged for 12 months in oak (38% new), the 2017 Proprietary Red Machete sports a deep garnet-purple color. It has a fragrant nose of black cherry compote, blueberry pie and dried mulberries with hints of candied violets, dark chocolate and roses. Full-bodied, rich and seductive, the palate delivers tons of opulent fruit and a plush texture, finishing long and perfumed."
Wine Spectator scored this 90 points saying "Brooding and potent, with concentrated blackberry and dried cherry flavors, laced with espresso and licorice notes, finishing with well-groomed tannins. Petite Sirah, Syrah and Grenache. Best from 2021 through 2029."
