David Swift Phinney founded Orin Swift Cellars in 1998; Orin is his father’s middle name and Swift is his mother’s maiden name. With two tons of zinfandel and not much else, he spent the next decade making wine for others as well as himself and grew the brand to what it is today. His wines are all very unique expressions in the art of winemaking with artistic labels that complete the package. Located in St. Helena in heart of Napa Valley he sources grapes from outstanding growers throughout the Valley and beyond.
This wine is a new release, Abstract 2018 red blend. Abstract, in its own way, is an abstract of what Orin Swift is all about. It has their signature drinkability, produced from quality grapes from vineyards across California and is accompanied by a piece of art by Dave Phinney. Grenache, Petit Sirah and Syrah aged 8 months in 27% new French and American oak. A starting point for most, Abstract is decidedly archetypal of many things to come on a journey with Orin Swift.
The Wine Advocate scored this 92 points saying "Aged for eight months in oak (27% new; of which, 57% was French oak), the 2018 Proprietary Red Abstract is a blend of Petite Sirah, Syrah, Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep garnet-purple colored, it offers up bombastic notions of crushed black cherries, warm plums and blueberry compote with hints of dried herbs, spice box and new leather. Full-bodied, the palate explodes with rich, ripe black and blue berry preserves and a velvety texture, finishing long and vibrant."
The Wine Spectator scored this 92 points saying "A bold and jammy blend, plump with personality, offering blackberry, espresso and smoky, peppered beef flavors that build structure toward medium-grained tannins. Syrah, Petite Sirah, Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2028."
