About Paul Hobbs 2017 Pinot Noir, Goldrock Estate, Sonoma Coast
Paul Hobbs is a winemaker who believes in tending each vineyard with meticulous care and vinifying with minimalist winemaking techniques that fully express the terroir.
This Pinot Noir is from a vineyard owned and farmed by Paul Hobbs. Goldrock estate vineyard is a mere five miles from the ocean, and at a height of 550 ft. above sea level, the vineyard rises just above the fog line to provide cooler climate conditions. Perched on the second coastal mountain ridge, this heavily maritime influenced vineyard with goldridge soil is on the edge of Pinot Noir viticulture and one of the most sought after sites in western Sonoma Coast.
Grapes were hand harvested at night and hand-sorted while still cold from the field. A 5 day cold soak was followed by fermentation in open-top stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts, 13% whole cluster inclusion. The wine was aged 15 months in 55% new French oak barrels.
James Suckling scored this 97 points saying "This is a glorious red with density and compressed character to the mouthfeel. Pure and very focused with crushed berries, orange peel and sandalwood. Edgeless. Exciting. Tight, yet so characterful and great. Drink or hold."
The Wine Advocate scored this 93 points saying "The 2017 Pinot Noir Goldrock Estate is pale to medium ruby-purple and scented of raspberry and strawberry preserves, crushed red cherries, Earl Grey tea leaves, tree bark and allspice with notes of licorice, dried herbs and rose petals. In the mouth, it has a medium to full weight and slowly building intensity of earth and spice-laced fruits, with a firm, grainy frame and seamless freshness, finishing long. Give this another year or two in bottle."
