About Quilt 2018 Red Blend, Napa Valley
Joseph Wagner is a fifth generation Napa Valley winemaker with a dedicated passion for the business. Joe’s roots in the winemaking began at an early age. His family founded Caymus Vineyards in Napa Valley. In 2014, Joe formed Copper Cane Wine & Provisions, with a focus on innovation and genuine craftsmanship, Copper Cane Wines & Provisions houses a collection of brands that are crafted to offer a touch of luxury for everyday indulgence. Quilt is one of those innovative wines. Drawing from a patchwork of six prime Napa Valley AVAs to create full-bodied, rich, and decadent wines, Quilt exemplifies the classic structure of wines from the region, while the blending of fruit from a variety of vineyards allows the wines to maintain more complexity and a better style consistency from vintage to vintage.
For this Quilt Red Blend they're working with grapes that represent the diversity of varietals cultivated in the Napa Valley. Petite Sirah, Merlot, Zinfandel, and Petit Verdot grapes from a spectrum of Napa Valley vineyards. From Oak Knoll in the South to Calistoga in the North. The result of blending these diverse varietals and regions yields a wine of extraordinary concentration, flavor, color and texture.
Each vineyard lot is kept separate from the moment the grapes were harvested until final blending. Once in the cellar, each lot is worked with in a tailor-made fashion, beginning with a deep cold soak to best prepare the skins to give up all
the phenolics and color they can during fermentation. Cold and long fermentations follow to coax these elements out. Finally, extended maceration to soften harsh
tannins. The wines are then aged in French Oak barrels.
The Petite Sirah adds spice and complexity, Merlot contributes round mouthfeel and soft tannins, Zinfandel provides a vibrant fruit core, and Petit Verdot gives structure and color to the final blend.
This Napa red shows expressive aromas of blackberry, dark chocolate, and lightly toasted oak and vanilla. The palate is full with complex flavors of ripe black cherry, cocoa, and hints brown spice and vanilla. There's a velvety mouthfeel and some good polished tannins offering structure for aging.
Another winner from the Wagners.
